New PI’s and old-timers alike, the reasons for joining professional organizations varies, but expectations of what to expect should be based solely on what the organization "offers" per se as opposed to what you want it to do for you.  I read the recent post from a newbie [based upon the PI license number] and I could not help but feel their frustration.  Best advice, build your client base from a broad base, but do not expect any one source to be the end-all for your livelihood.  Joining organizations is important: networking, education, learning about sources for information and product, etc.  But remember your competition is standing right beside you in those organizations and they are just as desperate for work as you are.

The sad thing about getting your license is that to run a business it takes more than just having the license.  Many PI’s are afraid to hire a licensee for fear that the licensee will turn around and walk out with half the business.  Has that ever happened before in this profession? - T-I-C - It is a dog-eat-dog business.  Many agencies would love to hire you; but you have to be loyal and ready to commit to the job.

Some firms are tight with the money while others are great opportunities.  I worked for six years before I started my firm and all I can say is that it takes sacrifice, hard-work, dedication, perseverance, fortitude, and MONEY $$$$.  Then when you are ready to start your business follow these principles and you will not fail: Always pay your rent, phones, employees, and data sources first, and then if anything is left, you get a check.  Remember padding the bill is unethical but charging the appropriate hourly fee to sustain your overhead, meeting your costs, and building a profit margin is not done by selling yourself short.

Good luck all.  Times are lean and mean these days so be prepared to sacrifice.
